Up on the Ridge
Product Description
Conventional wisdom says that in the music business, once you achieve a certain threshold of success, caution should be your guide. You’ve come this far, you’re told by everyone around you. Don’t surprise your audience too much. But trepidation will not be part of Dierks Bentley’s legacy. At every turn in his career, he’s done his own thing, whether that meant touring with jam bands, playing rock venues or recording with bluegrass all-stars on platinum country albums. Now Dierks steps forward with his most artistically daring project yet – the all-acoustic Up On The Ridge – a powerful, beautiful album steeped in the bluegrass and roots music that moved Dierks Bentley to be a country musician in the first place…. Everyone seems happy with Up on the Ridge’s bluegrass bent. I, however, am not. I’ve been a Dierks Bentley fan since I first heard one of his songs. I love his voice, not exactly smooth but textured and homey. The fact that he’s adorable with blonde curls only heightens the attraction. Some of the songs on this album are really great. These include the title track Up on the Ridge, Draw Me a Map, and Pride. For those of you who have been Dierks fans from the get-go, you’re not going to be too fond of this album because it’s different from anything he’s ever done. Far as I can tell, the Punch Brothers (never heard of them) or some kind of banjo happy rednecks who have dragged our beloved cowboy a little too deep into the bayou (and this is from a born and raised Louisianan). I’d say to give it a chance but I wouldn’t put any money down until you’ve listened to each individual track. For those of you who like a little more twang in their “country” you’ll enjoy this.

Not being a bluegrass fan this was not a CD I cared for at all and have in fact already given it away as listening to it once was more than enough for me. If you are a die hard Dierks fan it may be OK, if you’re a bluegrass fan it may be OK but if you like Dierks country sound stay far, far away from this new disc!!

This a poor effort for real bluegrass, I can think of so many bands that have made better bluegrass CDs this year, Josh Williams, The Grascals, Audie Blaylock to start with. This will work on CMT , but not up on the ridge.
His voice cracks alot on some songs,it sounds gravelly. The sound of the instruments are all washed out in reverb, YEEEEha!!

While it’s not what I would call a hard core bluegrass cd. It has it’s moments on Roving gambler and Down in the Mine. For the most part I hear more country music than I do bluegrass. I think it has a very mainstream sound at times. I would have love to hear the songs striped down.

OK – somewhat unique – not great but good listening of a new C & W artist
