Vocals and production are SOOO good . . . but with insanely boring songs . . . I cannot give one of my favorite singers more than 2 stars. This album is a sleeper. All pop or hip-hop are totally missing (except, of course, for the gratuitous guest-rap by Ludacris). After an amazing album by Brandy a little over a year ago, I was hoping for a revamped Monica on her tails, but all I’m hearing is old (and not in a good way) R&B. If you’re looking for something to fall asleep to or to give to your grandma, this is it. Even the Missy-produced tracks are super low-key. It seems odd that both Whitney and Mary J.’s albums last year sounded more contemporary than this.

I’m disappointed in this cd. Monica can do soooo much better. This cd is full of fillers. There’s not one SMASH hit on here. Her last cd, even though the sales lacked, was much better than this one.

Brief Introduction: I have been a loyal Monica fan throughout the years. I have every Monica album. I have thoroughly supported her career and I will continue to be loyal.
Honestly this album doesn’t cut it. With only two tracks that remotely even sound good I am very suprised at the number of positive reviews listed here (probable that the reviews are coming from the die hards). This album is boring. I watched the reality show. I saved the date…but this album def. was not worth it’s long anticipated wait.
I found the current single “Everything to Me” as well as “If You Were My Man” (betcha) as the best Still Standing had to offer. The rest of this album is filled with filler material. Honestly if this is the best she had to offer, she could have Stood to the Side.

…Monica, on the other hand, has just released her 6th studio album “Still Standing” and Fun is definitely not a word you can use to describe this outing. If you can get past her and producer Missy Elliott taking a DUMP on two R&B Classics (“Silly” by Deneice Williams is turned into the awful “Everything to Me” and “Betcha She Don’t Love You” by Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King into “If You Were My Man”), what your left with is a pretty standard contemporary R&B album. With her singing about the standard R&B stuff… Love, Love Loss, Cheating, Breaking Up, etc etc. However I think the biggest problem with this album, and Monica’s entire discography the past 8 years, is that she takes herself a little too seriously. The albums title track proves this, where she paints herself out to be this artist with so much adversity and so much hate, when that’s never been the case. Monica has always been one of the more respected artists in the R&B game, and she’s been wealthy and successful since she was 14 years old. So lyrics like “been through the storm, had dirt on my name” and “Whatever don’t kill you make you stronger, well I must be the world’s strongest woman” don’t make much sense to me knowing her story. And I think this self-imposed importance really makes some tracks that might have been great a little dull. Her contemporary and one time Rival Brandy released an album full of generic Pop songs in 2008, but it was her voice and her energy that brought those songs up. Monica is just lacking something and it’s probably because she thinks she can’t have fun or she won’t be taken seriously. The very last two songs are winners though, the Jermaine Dupri produced ballad “Love All Over Me” and the Stargate produced “Believing In Me” are a lot better than you would think given just the titles, and her voice matches up nicely with the simple productions. Overall, not a very good album, and to be frank Monica hasn’t really progressed much and that’s probably another major problem I have with the album. It can very easily blend into her last two albums “After the Storm” and “Raw”, and to me that’s not a good thing.

Monica opens up her fifth album with the title track “Still Standing” which is song I have never been able to get fully into. And having Ludacris on it doesn’t help it any. “One In A Lifetime” is a nice track and was originally labeled to be the first single. “Stay Or Go” is my favorite song on the album. The song was also covered by another artist by the name of Tynisha Keli but I have settled that I like both versions. I think I tend to favor Keli’s slightly more though. “Everything To Me” is just that but I think I have tired of it pretty quick though my friend is singing it every 10 minutes. “If You Were My Man” is another favorite of mine. I think it comes in the right place. It adds a little uptempo flavor to the mostly ballad album. Missy and her annoying voice could of been done without.
Now the second half “Mirror” is just okay to me; its pretty forgettable in my opinion. “Here I Am” was originally supposed to be a single as well; well as part of a dual single. It is one of my favorites and I like the feel of the song. “Superman” is a good song. I could definitely hear it on radio. “Love All Over Me” is another possible single choice. Jermaine Dupri produced and he did a good job on the production. And last but not least another one of my favorites is “Believing In Me”. It is the perfect closer to this album. I like the zone the song puts me in for some reason.
A lot of these songs leaked out months and some years ago; some they aren’t exactly fresh to everyone. I tried my best not to be spoiled by the leaks and I felt I did a good job. Monica put together a very nice album but I feel like I can’t fully get into it the way I want to. Maybe with a few more listens that will happen.
