Even those allergic to musicals may be won over by Once, a tender-hearted Irish romance with songs by Czech Republic–born Markéta Irglová and Frames frontman Glen Hansard. (The film’s director, John Carney, actually used to play bass in the group.) The trick here is that Irglová and Hansard also play the leads; because their characters are shown busking, writing music, or rehearsing, the songs are smoothly integrated in the film. The overall acoustic mood won’t surprise fans of the Frames–some tracks (“Say It to Me,” “When Your Mind’s Made Up”) have even popped up on the band’s albums, though the arrangements are more pared-down here, befitting the scruffy, street-musician setting. Being the lesser-known entity, I… More >>

If regurgitated odious drivel is your cup of tea, then this CD is for you. Glen Hansard’s raspy vocals are one step shy of the “fingernails down the chalkboard” cliché. The man sounds like a 2-pack-a-day smoker. Apropos clichés, the lyrics of every song on the CD are as unimaginative and unoriginal as can possibly be. The songwriters simply strung together every known love-song aphorism into a long and painful ode, much like something one would read in a depressed teenager’s diary. The themes of rejection, mistrust, endless pathetic longing are recycled mercilessly. The musical composition and Mr. Hansard’s guitar playing skills fall somewhere between a drunk/stoned/semi-conscious Bob Dylan playing a benefit concert for starving Africa and a folk festival rendition of Eric Clapton’s “Tears In Heaven” as performed by a street-corner Jesus on methadone. Mr. Hansard appears to be conjuring all his efforts in his endeavour to sound like a real musician, often compensating for lack of originality with his shrieks and screams, worthy of any death-metal band. If Marketa Irglova, who has an inkling of potential, wants to gain some respect as a musician, the first thing she must do is distance herself from people like Glen Hansard.

i am not inspired to expound beyond the title of my review… this middle of the road moaning is completely unimaginative and really doesn’t deserve analysis. i can not believe how anyone could possibly enjoy this. i actually wish i didn’t feel this way – i don’t like panning someone’s artistic work, but in this case i would feel remiss if i didn’t only because of the large amount of undeserved praise it’s been receiving.

I had the misfortune of watching this film in theaters. Drawn in on promises of a thrilling musical score and a story based on a struggling musician’s life, I was sorely disappointed.
I will keep my opinion of the actual film separate from this review, as this is just the sound track.
Bottom line is that this musical score, is lacking, especially for a soundtrack of a film so centered around music. The vast majority of the songs take beginners guitar chords and place it against mediocre vocals which often repeat themselves to the point that it becomes apparent that the writers thought up one basic hook and failed to come up with anything more.
Perhaps the sound track truly does not deserve a 1 star rating, but I am putting the rating of this score that low to counter balance other people’s overrating reviews.
These songs failed miserably to wow me. The composers seemed scared to venture out of their comfortable zone, creating a uniformly bland album. You would be better off saving your money for this one trick pony soundtrack.

Music has no set style, it is very generic. Perhaps if you saw the movie you would enjoy the CD but otherwise it is very bland.
