Freight Train
Album Description

I realise that I am going to be in a minority here, but I have to ask the queation, why is it Alan, that you could follow up the excellent ‘Good Time’ album, with an outing as mundane & uninteresting as this? I have been a fan for as long as you have been recording, & with the exception of the atrociously tedious ‘Like Red on a Rose’, I am the proud owner of all your other studio albums, plus both Greatest Hits, and the exceptional live outing with George Strait & Jimmy Buffet. So the release of a new AJ album is normally an event I look forward to. Not so in the case of ‘Freight Train’. And I am profoundly thankful that I had the opportunity to listen to the entire album before purchasing it. What a disappointment, with only 3 tracks worth listening to: the ballads ‘Taillights Blue’ & ‘Till the End’, & the catchy, ‘I Could Get Used To This Lovin’ Thing’. Really Alan, you are a truly great talent – both singer & songwriter – but you can do much better than this. Your fans deserve better. There are too few country artists today, who can honestly claim to be adherents to traditional country music, & Alan jackson is certainly one of them, however, limp & lifeless songs & albums (like this album & the majority of its songs) that lack the spirit of that tradition, while no doubt satisfying the die-hard fans who think Alan can do no wrong, is unlikely to win over new fans – to the artist or the genre. Oh please, do better the next time Alan.

I rated this as 5 stars just because I really like “It’s Just That Way” and I really like Alan Jackson’s music. Just note that Amazon will ship the CD to you for $2 less than the download price. I get that they want to charge more for the convenience of downloading but with respect to “green” policies, why would there be savings associated with a physical item that has to be delivered vs. direct download?
Seems like it would be a good “green” initiative to make the physical CD at least equal in price to the download version. Just my two cents.

I’ve been an AJ fan for years, and this one as well as his last one are not his better ones. If he doesn’t get his act together with his music I won’t be buying any more of his CD’s

I am neither a fan nor a detractor of Alan Jackson, but I know a freight train when I see one. Unfortunately the art department went wrong on the cover, as the Pennsy E series engine in Tuscan Red livery was a passenger department job. The darker Brunswick Green was the usual color for freight trains. While we are at it, why a Pennsy engine anyway? How about a Southern, a Dixie Flyer, or a Seaboard Airline engine [Through The Heart Of The South]? So I take one star off, but leave the rest to the fans of the music. Anyway, Bluegrass is the real train music!
