First of all, I get that hip hop is self promoting to begin with. I’ve been a hip hop and reggae head for YEARS. The idea of mixing two legends like Jr. Gong and Nas was a great one and one can not discredit the production quality, beats, concept, or individual skills of either artist when listening to this album. I was bordering between one and two stars and I went with one for these reasons.
Nas comes off as a self indulgent moron throughout this entire album, to be perfectly honest. Listen to his lyrics. He vaguely touches on issues of struggle and guns and God but with the insight and philosophy of a child. His rhymes seem forced and his words lack the substance and positive connotations that you would expect from a seasoned “conscious” MC. It seems that he is writing about what he THINKS he should be writing about. I’ll also say that for an album described by both artists as an “ode to the motherland” and an “exploration of our shared heritage” Nas seems completely consumed with himself.
You can really tell that Damian was the brains and blood behind this album. They said at the Grammy museum that Damian produced a lot of it. If you were to get rid of Nas completely, I’d give the album 3 stars. Damian’s lyrics are sharp and poignant, with an obvious knowledge of issues outside himself while remaining confident and aware of his own talent. My problem with Damian on this record is the lack of originality and musical diversity when it comes to his melodic range. I know his style of toasting is very repetitive (as most is), but following the same basic 3 note melody with small little changes just does not do the Marley name justice. THIS IS BOB’S SON. THIS IS A GRAMMY WINNING ARTIST. Give me something really melodic and harmonious that doesn’t feel like you guys sat around in the studio drinking Guiness and smoking for 3 freaking years for the equivalent to half an album from both of you.
And c’mon Nas – your picture looks like you are this wise old philosopher just thinking about all the children that need your help…am I wrong? You come off on this album like Damian’s protege’s protege. Do I have to even mention that idiocy of Lil’ Wayne?!?!? The fact that a MARLEY is doing songs with someone who has been arrested multiple times for guns and cocaine seriously makes me laugh and then want to scream.
Thanks for reading. The new Talib Kweli album is dope.

I simply don’t like this collabo. Maybe a few songs touched me but take Nas’ flow on a different harder beat and maybe it would be better? Nas is a hip hop legend and being part Jamaican myself I was really looking forward to this release. Sadly the production is very lackluster and forgettable in my opinion. It isn’t that Damian is bad but I don’t think the chemistry is there for the two on this album. It was a nice attempt but this one will be forgotten to me. Hey to each there own though. Many reviews here that I’m seeing thoroughly enjoy it giving it 5 stars. Just not my bag and yes I’m a very open minded person when it comes to genres of music. Maybe next time?
UPDATE 5/22: yeah…still not feeling this album. I tried it again and to me it’s not very good. Compared to other reggae I listen to and also not a big fan of the Marley sound anyhow this just isn’t for me. I go for more of the harder dancehall/mixtape stuff. This album imo has no pulse to keep me tuned in. Nice idea/effort though.

In my humble opinion Nas is the best MC alive. I know what you are thinking now, what about Jay. I happen to like Jay, but lyrically Nas hands down. I was waiting to find the song on this album that was just ok and did not hear it. The colabo between these two is amazing. Money well spent and I look forward to future project from these Legends. For me album of the year! Hopefully Nas can get his first grammy and Damian can get another. They deserve it.
