Chamber Music Society
Product Description
Centuries ago, long before the advent of radio or recording technology, chamber music was the music for the masses – the music in which people from nearly every segment of society could find meaning and relevance. A decade into the 21st century, Esperanza Spalding – the bassist, vocalist and composer who first appeared on the jazz scene in 2008 – takes a contemporary approach to this once universal form of entertainment with Chamber Music Society. Backed by drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and pianist Leo Genovese – and inspired by the classical training of her younger years – Esperanza creates a modern chamber music group that combines the spontaneity and intrigue of improvisation with sweet and angular s… More >>

I Love Esperanza, but I’m afraid this CD misses the boat. Anyone who’s ever seen her live can’t help but be mesmerized! Frankly this CD is boring, A couple of outstanding tunes but the rest is Al J & Bobby Mac-F est! Jazz didn’t start yesterday never forget the roots more standards would have served up well! For all she’s got she can’t reinvent the wheel! The wounds of a lover are “Faithful”!

I hope the reviewing sessions of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States get the opportunity to have this outstanding release on the itinerary, since at least one Grammy Award – if not more – will be easily penciled into the 2011 show.
With sensational jazz and classic pop sensibilities, Esperanza Spalding delivers an impressive 11 tracks that have world music sounds and a flair for the era of flappers and philosophers. The central piece – which just happens to be track six – is the touching “Apple Blossom,” a vocal duet featuring Spalding (who is also the composer/arranger) and Milton Nascimento. The short “As a Sprout” glides into “What a Friend,” which has Spalding’s best work on acoustic bass. Her smooth vocals and bass playing on “Winter Sun” and sweet vocals on “Inutil Paisagem” make for an irresistible twin bill.
Spalding’s arrangement of “Wild is the Wind” has crossover appeal and she makes interesting use of poet William Blake’s “The Fly” in “Little Fly,” which is the first number. The string arrangements by Spalding and Gil Goldstein (they are album co-producers) add touching textures to “Knowledge of Good and Evil,” “Really Very Small” and “Chacarera.” The warmth in the performance of “Short and Sweet” is a solid way to conclude the album.
This is her third release as a solo artist and second for the Cleveland, Ohio-based Heads Up International, a division of Concord Music Group, Inc. At age 25, the compass for her career is pointing to a path that has limitless potential.

I’ve been following Esperanza’s career for a couple years now. Needless to say, I was very excited for this release. I’m happy to report that Esperanza managed to exceed my expectations with Chamber Music Society. During the evolution of Jazz, many different iterations have risen up. It’s very easy to classify these iterations. Thankfully, this is not the case with Chamber Music Society. Not only does Esperanza break the mold and define a new style of Jazz, she makes it impossible to classify with any certainty. I look forward to many more albums from this young prodigy!
